The Smart Water Management - GIA Program is a public-private partnership that seeks to develop and implement strategies focused on a climatically smart coffee-growing activity in Colombia. To achieve this goal, it works hand in hand with the National Federation of Coffee Growers, posing a territorial approach at the level of micro-basins, which has allowed them to reach small farmers in a direct manner, where a significant percentage of production is being generated. As part of this project, important advances have been made in the diagnosis and beginnings of the implementation of a comprehensive management plan in 25 micro-watersheds located in Antioquia, Caldas, Cauca, Nariño and Valle del Cauca, thus be-nefiting 11,000 families of farmers.
In this context, GIA has decided to take an additional step, looking for the certification of the activities carried out within one of these micro-watersheds located in the municipality of Sevilla, Valle del Cauca, under the standard of the Alliance for Water Stewardship – AWS organization. In this regard, Antea Group, in a bilateral project between its offices in Colombia and the United States, is assisting the Federation to meet the goal and be certified before the end of 2016, where the first activity was a workshop for the team which was facilitated by Francisco Cordero, senior consultant on water issues. We do hope to work hand in hand with AWS throughout the whole process, because this is one of the first initiatives in Colombia for the implementation of this standard.
